The work at Vanks

Even though the welding was good at Vankerkovens we were disappointed again with the general lack of care for peoples boats or for the environment. Spent welding rods, used gloves, cardboard boxes et all, were casually thrown into the dry dock to either disappear into the mud or get washed into the canal or a boats cooling systems. The welders clamped their earth lead onto a well painted bollard, so removing the paint to bear metal, instead of looking for a bare patch of bare metal to use. The attitude to safety was also casual or dismissive because workers didn't like goggles, ear defenders or overalls or maybe thought they looked uncool? We offered ear defenders and goggles to the workers doing the needle gunning and both refused as they didn't like wearing safety gear!

Aft top rubbing strake

A rusted through section at the stern being overplated and the top D-bar welded back on.

Fire watch

Lawrence and Tilly on fire watch! Basically the welding on the hull was close to diesel tanks in the engine so Lawrence was on watch to protect the tanks inside the boat and stop the inside paint from setting light by spraying small squirts of water on blackening areas.

Tired Tilly

All too tiring for Tilly so she takes a break and tries to sleep while using a shoe as an ear defender. I wonder if she can hear the sea?

Painting the name

The yard workers painted the main hull and we painted the names and draft marks.
